Exploring Oil Pastels
Date: Thrusday, July 8
Instructor: Sarah Jowett
Ages: 5 - 7
Time: 10am to 12pm.
Cost: $10 per child.
Oil pastels were invented in 1927 by Sakura Cray-Pas Company in Japan in order to bring colourful expression to children, in an effort to move away from the repetitious work done in pen and ink. This workshop teaches the unique quality of the oil pastel, one of the most brilliant mediums in art, emphasizing shape, design, blending techniques and colour theory.
Family Mineral Field Trip
Date: Saturday, July 10
Instructor: Steve Smith
Time: Meet in the Cultural Centre parking lot at 10am
Cost: $10 per person
Led by Steve Smith organizers of the Haliburton Geological Society
Rocks abound in Haliburton but did you know it is one of Canada’s major source for minerals? Smith is well acquainted with every nook and cranny knowing where to find minerals as well as explaining how they were formed. You will be responsible for driving yourself, children need to be accompanied, please ask for details. A map will be given at the beginning. Wear outdoor clothes for all weather and sturdy shoes. Bring water and snacks. Participants are required to sign a waiver. Everyone will have an opportunity to take samples.
Family Drum Making
Date: Wednesday July 14 and Thursday, July 15
Instructor: John Proctor
Ages: 8-12 (parents are welcome)
Time: 1pm to 4pm.
Cost: $20 per person
John Proctor has been making and playing drums at his Earth Tones Studio for many years. In this 4 hour workshop (over 2 sessions) you will learn how to make a coffee can drum with beater. The drums will then be primed and decorates with paints. Included in the 2 sessions would be rhythm drumming circles using only recycled and "found" items for musical instruments.
How To Write A Little Ditty
Date: Saturday, July 17
Instructor: Trina West
Ages: 10+
Time: 10am to 3pm. Children need to bring snacks and lunch.

This is not for the ‘Wanna Be Idols’…no, this is the beginning of a true musician! Trina West will teach the basic melodies and phrasing to create songs. Youth are encouraged to bring an instrument if they wish and any lyrics they may have written.
Exploring Outlines and Watercolours
Date: Thursday, July 22

Time: 10am to 12pm.

Watercolours is one of the most challenging but gratifying mediums in art. Children will be viewing work by famous Canadian artist David Milne’s watercolour paintings, discussing his technique of pen and watercolours. This workshop will introduce the basic wet and dry methods. Using vibrant colour and strong outlined shapes children will have fun working in the world of watercolour.
Drama Day: Star on the stage
Date: Saturday, July 24
Instructor: Kelsey Crowe
Ages: 7+ , Inside and on museum grounds
Time: 10am to 3pm. Children need to bring snacks and lunch.
Cost: $10 per person
Act out and up and every which direction during this fun day, where the louder and more energetic the better! For once, children will be encouraged to make things up. Children will work together in creating characters, a storyline and learn acting tips: how to project, convey emotion, hold attention, direct etc. The day ends with a short performance for parents to watch.
Responding To Music Visually

Have you ever experienced images in your mind when listening to music? This is a very creative exercise artists use to break from day-to-day and delve into pure imagination. It’s a simple enough technique but the results are very individualistic and impressive. Children will be given numerous opportunities to listen to music sans vocal, discussing first as a group their impressions in order to understand the concept. Then they will try to convey their own impressions with drawing of large colourful shapes, discussing how music and art convey emotion. Finally children will create a mixed media piece envisioned in their mind influenced from a piece of music incorporating images from magazines, their own drawings and other art materials.
Pioneer Days

Have you ever wondered how people lived in old times? What was the journey like, and what was the Country like when they got here? These questions and many more will be answered in games, activates and crafts as you explore the site and learn about children in the late 1880’s.
Heritage Olympics
Date: Thursday, Aug 5

Ages: 5-7
Time: 10am to 12pm
Cost: $10 per child
What sports and outdoor activities did the Victorian children play? What was gym class like in the Victorian School? What games and activities did the children play during the warm summer months? Play games like thread the needle and croquet and compete in your very first heritage Olympics.
A Day With Sled Dogs
Date: Saturday, Aug 7
Instructor / owner: Carmen Hanak
Ages: 7+
Time: 10am to 3pm. Children need to bring snacks and lunch.
Cost: $10 per child
The Centre will be welcoming Hanak’s dogs for the day. These dogs are trained for pulling dogsleds. Fast and energetic, these dogs will be available to interact with those in the workshop, where you will learn the unique aspects of the dogs, their personalities and abilities. Children will also learn about the long history of the sled dog in Haliburton county. Each child will then have a choice as to which dog they wish to ‘adopt’. They will receive an official adoption card and have their picture taken with their dog. At the end of the workshop children will write and draw an adventure story about themselves and their dog.
Mono-type Printmaking
Date: Thursday, Aug 12

Ages: 5-7
Time: 10am to12pm
Cost: $10 per child
This form of printmaking does not require a press but the action of rubbing ones hand to transfer ink to paper. A simple but very effective art method this form of printmaking can be done at home. Working with printing inks and paints children will create images on plexiglass plates which paper is laid on and pressed to create an original print.
Star Academy – Children’s Writing Ed Kay

Ed Kay, an award winning comic television writer, has released his hilarious first novel, Star Academy for young readers. Edward’s television writing has garnered him three Gemini Awards, three Canadian Comedy Awards, a Canadian Screenwriting Award, and an International Emmy nomination. He has been writing/producing children’s television shows for Teletoon, YTV, the Comedy Network and more for years with writing credits on Jibber Jabber and Atomic Betty. In 2009, he was the co-creator and story editor for Jimmy Two Shoes on Teletoon, Disney. He will do a reading and talk to the kids about writing for animated and live action television shows versus writing novels. He will help show them how to turn crazy imaginings into stories.
3-D Art Bugs

Bugs are in important part of our ecological system. Art bugs are even more important because when ‘bit’ by one you will always be an art lover. This sculpture-making workshop delves into the world of imaginary bugs that live in art forms. They are incredibly clever and hard to find, children must look through much art to see them, but once they have – and created a real one to keep – their knowledge of colour, shape and texture will have grown.
All The Right Moves

Ages: 7+
Time: 1pm to 3pm
Cost: $10 per person
Jackie has 23 years of experience as a dancer and instructor. She will teach the students modern dance, creative movement, play improvisation games and some of the principals in choreography. No experience necessary, children who like to boogie are welcome. They will break into small groups and choreograph a short piece and have the chance it to show it to the others and any parents who come a bit early at the end of the day!

If you were a sock puppet what would, you, look like? And better how would you act? Create your mini-me sock puppet as well as members of your family and if you’d like put yourself in a short sock puppet show at the end of the class. We will build a small cardboard stage using found objects. Children need to bring: socks a light colour sock that fits your hand and is long enough to come up to your elbow; favourite worn out garment that’s destine for the landfill site; jewellery pieces that are broken; found objects.
