The Golden Slipper

Under the Big Top at the Minden Hills Cultural Centre
The Golden Slipper is an original play by Michael Fay produced by local community theatre group, the Conjurors of County Town. The play looks at the world of 1936 through the eyes of two young couples, trying to make sense of the tumultuous times. Featuring dramatic action and lively period music, the turning point occurs at a nightclub in the Highlands, where the couples decide to go to Spain to stop the spread of fascism. Directed by Emily Stonehouse and starring Arlen Mighton, Aaron King, Kaily Schell, Monica Sullivan, Caroline McLachlan Darling, Sheryl Loucks, and Tudor Holton.

R.D. Lawrence Literary Festival
Friday, August 13 11 am - 8:30pm & Saturday, August 14 10 am - 4pm
This Hour Has 22-Minutes writer Ed Kay will share his award-winning brand of comedy with audiences. Ed is also an extremely successful children's writer who has written television shows and a new novel. Enter his imaginative world in a workshop on Saturday morning.
He is one of six stars to be gracing the festival stage. Antanas Sileika, Humber School of Writers director, has worked with most of the Can-Lit stars this country boasts of having, as well as being a successful novelist himself. This is your chance to get a peek inside the world of the literati.
Betsy Struthers is a poet extraordinaire and has been publishing in many different forms and winning national awards for her work! Her friend Michelle Berry, is an exciting novelist, who just won the contract to write a book based on the hit television series Being Erica.
Local cottagers Robert Rotenberg and Thomas Scott will also grace the stage with readings and workshops. Robert's book Old City Hall, has been translated into several different languages and rights have been sold to turn it into a TV series. For local readers who loved his legal thriller, great news, he has more on the way! Thomas has received an overwhelming response to his first collection of poetry so has now put out his second book - do not miss his charming, humourous reading of his work!

The festival features a Sunset Ceremony, Friday, Aug. 13 at 7pm. Featuring local spoken-word artist Ryan Dawson, and Minden Times reporter Chad Ingrams, who moonlights as a singer/songwriter. Our authors will be on stage for some wordy sparring and to take questions from the audience, who are gauranteed to be enthralled by their words of wit and wisdom.
Plus we will have local authors selling their books on site for the two days and an Open Mic on Sat. afternoon from 1-4pm.

Highlands Brass Academy Concert

Enjoy an exceptional concert after a week-long intensive advanced program with some of Canada's musical masters. Details are on the Highlands Brass Academy website at www.highlandsbrass.org. Tickets are $12.
Minden Fringe

The Fringe features one act plays, story telling, monologues, and other fare from the creative community in the Highlands. $10 in advance, $12 at the door, $5 for youth 12-16, and free for children under 12.
August 20th--From Here to There and Back Again--Creative Cocoon Storytellers present an original story told in two voices is inspired by real life stories from the community, woven into the framework of the Hero's Journey, travelling from the real world, into the imaginary world, and back again.
August 20th--Radio Nowhere--An original play by Aaron King, "Radio Nowhere" presents a portrait of a physics student and a musician, falling out of love and reconsidering their lives, their aspirations and the worlds beyond them.
August 27th--And the Word Was--Marci Mandel brings her "courageous," "touching" and revealing writing style to the stage in this performance piece that stars Gemini award winning actor/writer/producer Brigitte Gall. Taking inspiration from a biblical quote, the two bring their talents together to spin a sonic story that resonates deep within and brings light to a primal truth. August 27th--The Edge-Stories of Courage and Fear--Presented by the Highlands Community Playback Theatre. The troupe will bring to life audience stories elicited by a quote of unknown origin: "When you come to the edge of all the light you know/ And are about to step into the darkness of the unknown.../ One of two things will happen:/There will be solid ground to stand on or/ You will be taught to fly."
Victorian Tea
August 25, 2-4pm
Scones and cucumber sandwiches, delightful music and entertainment. An afternoon of simple enjoyments. $7 per person.

The Jake Wilkinson Quintet
August 28, 7 pm Under the Big Top at the Cultural Centre
Jazz it up with internationally renowned trumpeter, conductor, composer, lyricist, producer and arranger Jake Wilkinson and his Quintet. Jake, who according to the Toronto Star, “handles trumpet with an enviable boldness and enthusiasm plus powerful technique” will be playing at the Minden Hills Cultural Centre on August 28 at 7pm. Tickets are $30. Wine and hors d'œuvres will be served. |
