Conjurors of County Town

About Us

The Conjurors of County Town is a group of volunteers who make history come alive at the Minden Hills Cultural Centre. They emerged in 2005 to invite Queen Victoria and her entourage to come to Minden on Victoria Day weekend to re-enact our imagination of what her 1897 Diamond Jubilee might have been like, had she celebrated it here. In the summer of 2006, the Conjurors mounted "A Little Study in Scheming", a one-act play developed from a scrap of script found in the Museum archives, written by an unknown Minden playwright around 1900. The play included cameos by three historical characters who were likely suspects as the author of the original script, and the audience was invited to vote for their choice. In the summer 2007, Conjurors produced "The Last of the Great White Pine", an original musical taking place at the 1885 Minden Fall Fair. French loggers and English settler boys competed for the love of the Reeve’s daughters against the backdrop of the story of the commercial harvest of pine in this area. This summer, of course, we are bringing you the 1935 saga of the exploitation of another resource, our running water.

The conjurors are a core of six or ten people who have heeded the siren call of Michael Fay's creative leadership and passion about bringing lost history alive, and having fun while so doing. The group swells to include the broad spectrum of skills and energy needed as well move into production- actors, directors, set designers and creators, costume designers and creators, stage managers, front of house organizers, advertisement sellers, promotion people, fund and donation seekers, program designers...indeed, all the roles involved in any theatrical organization. All volunteers, although we are making progress toward the goal of paying a stipend for all creative roles, as a way of recognizing theatre as an economic investment, a business.

The Golden Slipper
The Golden Slipper  is an original play by Michael Fay produced by local community theatre group, the Conjurors of County Town. The play looks at the world of 1936 through the eyes of two young couples, trying to make sense of the tumultuous times.  Featuring dramatic action and lively period music, the turning point occurs at a nightclub in the Highlands, where the couples decide to go to Spain to stop the spread of fascism.
