The Agnes Jamieson Gallery was founded in 1981 and is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Agnes Jamieson who worked diligently to ensure Minden had an art gallery where the significant collection of André Lapine’s work would be preserved.
The Agnes Jamieson Gallery has recently developed a new focus for its programming. Primarily, the exhibitions will be Canadian landscape as it reflects the gallery's collection, location and community. This will include influential landscape art of the past and exhibitions addressing the continuous development of Canadian landscape today.
The gallery’s goal is to foster an appreciation for Canadian landscape art as an important part of Canadian heritage and culture. We will do this by: Presenting the work of traditional landscape artists who had a significant impact on the genre and created their work in “our backyard”; exposing the viewer to the “new landscape” by presenting the work of contemporary artists; filling the gap between artist and viewer by cultivating a variety of opportunities for the public to communicate with the artist; and encouraging and supporting Canadian landscape artists working in all mediums.
André Lapine
The gallery exhibits its collection of over one hundred pieces of Lapine’s work throughout the year.
Born in Latvia in 1866, Andreas Christian Gottfried Lapine began his formal training as an artist at the age of 18. He travelled to England, France and Holland where he studied until his marriage and immagration to Manitoba in 1905. In 1912 he moved to Toronto where he became a successful illustrator at Brigden Ltd. He was accepted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1919. His paintings were very popular and he was described in the media as the "Gentle Cavalier, the best illustrator of horses in Canada". A major success in the 1920s and 30s, Lapine’s work exhibited in the most prestigious shows. Today his work is in numerous public collections across Canada. Lapine died in 1952.
