LOGO(S) January 21 to March 13, 2010
Overall: Laurie Carmount - Curator, Agnes Jamieson Gallery
Hi Laurie,
Just thought I'd let you know how much I enjoyed the opening reception of Logos at your gallery.
Responding to Lois' invitation I drove up from Toronto for the event. What a wonderful, warm and friendly atmosphere. As I already indicated in my conversation with you, I really appreciated your opening remarks. They well provided the framework and raison d'etre for the exhibit as well as introduced the artists to the gathering. It was great to see them there.
It was lovely to be able to spend about 2 hours wondering about the different rooms, chatting to friends and acquaintances and especially you and the artists themselves. I always enjoy some exchange of ideas and information and it's very interesting to hear other people's observations and comments.
I found the concept of Logos and its correlation with Logo a bit complex, but also intriguing. Made me think. I liked the display of the art itself, each in its own area. I liked going back and forth seeing and thinking about it. I liked the different media: pastels, photography, pottery.
I think the most interesting thing about this exhibit is the fact that I continue thinking about it.
I like the power of Lois' art, displayed large in a large room, almost like a triptych. From right to left, in counterclockwise direction: the creation, stasis, and erosion - the Logos of our landscape. Michael's art is contemporary and crisp. To my mind his representations best merge the logos and the logo. I like his sense of humour. And then all by itself is the body. I really like the medium Wayne uses.
And that's how it goes: one body, many ideas and our ever changing landscape. Shown by three artists, in three areas, in three different mediums are the three logos: the logos of the landscape, the logos of the mind, and the logos of the body - physicality, intellect and emotion - the body of clay, the snapshot of the mind, and the surround of landscape.
All in all a great exhibit and I'm not done thinking about it yet.
Congratulations to each one of the artists, and congratulations to you Laurie!!!
Thanks!

To Wayne Rose: I really enjoyed these 3D images representing commoditization of the human body”
To Michael Bainbridge: I agree – Always Open. I recognized the colours and knew what the photos were of then turned and sat to tie my show and spotted the cans on the floor and laughed out loud”
To Lois Raw: Bold concept and execution! Really enjoy the grand scale but built up in sections. A wonderful impression at end of corridor upon entering. Very good show, thank you.

- I’m very proud of our Haliburtonians…what a good job you two have done! Embroidery on photo transfers…that really says something about how painters use photographs, how we all use photographs to relate to visual reality; and indeed, before photos existed, what did people “see”? And the Silk Road, yes, imagine! Thanks, Gay Bell.
- A brilliant spectrum of moods, colours, textures-a real source of inspiration right here in our own community! Gratefully, Doug Smith

- It can certainly redefine the craft…When fabric and sewing is used we say “fabric art” or art quilts when oils or water colours are used we say paintings (period). When other media is used we say Mixed Media we need not use the techniques to describe the art. So this is a great ART SHOW. –Colette Dionne
