The Minden Hills Museum is a community museum made up of 6 heritage buildings and a collections building owned and operated by the Township of Minden Hills. The Museum is under the administrative umbrella of the Minden Hills Cultural Centre (MHCC) which, along with the museum, is made up of the Agnes Jamieson Gallery (a public art gallery) and the R.D. Lawrence Place (literary arts and environmental education centre).  The MHCC site also houses the Minden Branch of the Haliburton County Public Library and Highland Media Arts, a community based media arts and education organization. 

Minden Hills Museum’s Curator/Heritage Programmer is a dynamic and enthusiastic individual who understands community based programming and possesses a keen interest and/or experience in heritage education, cultural history or museum studies.  Reporting to the Director of the Minden Hills Cultural Centre, the Curator /Heritage Programmer is responsible for the museum collection, the day-to-day operations of the museum, the development of heritage education programs for school groups and for the delivery of community programs.

PART 1 – DESCRIPTION OF JOB REQUIREMENTS

General Accountabilities: Under the supervision of the Cultural Centre Director, the Curator/Heritage Programmer develops, implements and supervises the exhibits; develops curriculum-based school programming and other educational programming and activities; manages collections care; maintains eligibility for Community Museums Operating Grant funding; ensures Canadian Museums standards are met; liaises with community agencies and individuals regarding on-going museum activities and performs other related work as necessary.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is a part time, permanent, non-union position. The incumbent will receive the Township of Minden Hills benefit package. 

Specific Accountabilities
The following accountabilities are not listed in order of priority:

Collections Care & Management:
• Reviews and up-dates collections policy and procedures as necessary;
• Cares for, manages, accessions, establishes and maintains registration practices, cataloguing, inventory and information systems procedures in accordance with museum’s collections policy and procedures;
• Protects and preserves collections against physical, chemical and biological damage or decay in accordance with museum’s collections policy.
• Works with the community, collectors and other institutions in the loan of objects
• Works closely with the Collections Assistant to contact and solicit community sources and potential lenders and donors of artifacts, material, information and assistance.

Exhibition & Educational Programs
• Plans, designs and installs exhibitions, with assistance from Collections Assistant
• Works closely with other MHCC curators, professional museum colleagues, community, schools and others in developing these exhibitions.
• Develops public educational programs such as school tours, live historic demonstrations, seminars, teaching workshops, family programs, docent program and publications.
• Works with professional colleagues to make arrangements for temporary/travelling exhibitions including shipping, receiving, insurance, condition assessment etc.
• Assists in grant writing and other sources of resource development.

Buildings & Maintenance:
• Works closely with MHCC Director and other municipal departments to ensure continued physical preservation of the museum buildings and the collections which it houses.
• Develops and maintains maintenance procedures, logs and schedules in accordance with professional standards and procedures.
• Works with MHCC director and MHCC advisory committee in planning and development of capital improvements which will affect the cares and management of the museum’s collections.

Administration & Overall Professional Operation of Museum:
• Prepares and maintains annual budget as part of Minden Hills budget process
• Researches, analyses and recommends new policy, implements existing policies
• Trains and supervises seasonal staff and volunteers.
• Maintains all relevant statistics and prepares reports as needed in accordance with the MHCC Strategic Action Plan.
• Reviews and follows correspondence, documents and material relating to public enquiries
• Works closely with other MHCC curators on Centre-wide initiatives and in developing annual exhibitions and programs.

Qualifications:
Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Example combinations are listed below:

Technical Skills/Education
• Undergraduate degree or equivalent coursework in museum studies.
• 3 – 5 years museum/heritage facility experience, including collections management, exhibition development and educational programming.

Knowledge of:
• Accepted Canadian museum standards and procedures.
• Familiar with collections software (Past Perfect).
• Current conservation practices and standards, artifact preservation and protection techniques.
• Exhibition development, including intellectual content, interpretive techniques and physical design.
• Educational program development and Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum.
• A variety of academic fields such as history, anthropology, folklore and art.
• Promoting, public relations, customer service methods and communication techniques.
• Safety practices in museum setting.
• Supervision and training.

Ability to:
• Design and develop exhibits in a team setting.
• Implement high quality educational programming.
• Work with and oversee work of volunteers.
• Use a variety of simple hand tools and perform light to moderate manual work.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Foster and maintain harmonious working relationships with other MHCC staff, volunteers, officials and the public.
• Supervise, train and evaluate seasonal staff
• Operate office computer, use Excel, Past Perfect, and other applicable software programs.

Working Conditions:
Normal office working conditions apply and the individual does have the ability to move freely as required to reduce fatigue.  Occasional long periods of standing required during some museum program activities.  Assists in the set-up and dismantling of displays that may require physical demands such as lifting and moving of displays, furniture, etc.
