Assistant to the Museums & Technology Project Coordinator
May 30 to September 3, 2011
$12.00/hour for 40/hrs per week flexed Monday – Saturday

In 2010, the Minden Hills Museum began a collaborative project to enhance collections management systems and to build capacity in heritage organizations within our region through the use of technology. With assistance from the Ontario Ministry of Culture Museums and Technology Fund, we began implementing year one of the plan through a partnership with the other sections of the Minden Hills Cultural Centre (Agnes Jamieson Gallery and R.D. Lawrence Place), plus the Stanhope Heritage Discovery Museum and the Haliburton Sculpture Forest.

In 2011, year two of the project, we are expanding on the work done for and by the initial partners in year one by developing virtual exhibitions and a joint web portal.  We will also include new partners, allowing us to move forward in achieving our longer term goal of ultimately accommodating all heritage organizations in the County of Haliburton. These new partners in 2011 will be the Haliburton Highlands Museum, Dorset Heritage Museum and the Red Cross Outpost Hospital Museum, a National Historic Site located in Wilberforce.

The successful applicant will assist the Coordinator in all aspects of this project including:

- Cataloguing and/or digitizing portions of the collections of the partners and technological assistance in the creation of virtual exhibits
- Working with and receiving training from a website designer in the maintenance of a collaborative website.
- Assisting the coordinator in training heritage workers & volunteers at the seven partner museums in the use of museum cataloguing and virtual exhibit software, and website maintenance.

The candidate will have:

- an interest in history, english and museum studies.
- computer literacy skills, and preferably  a familiarity with PastPerfect Software.

- knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word
- an interest in heritage and the arts
- experience working independently

- access to a vehicle for travel to the seven partner locations

Job 1: Assistant Curator, R.D. Lawrence Place
June 30 - August 28 2010. POSSIBLE MAY 10th START DATE PENDING FUNDING
$10.25/hour for 35/hrs per week, Tuesday - Saturday

Job Description:

R.D. Lawrence Place (RDLP), a new museum and literary centre dedicated to award-winning writer and naturalist R.D. Lawrence. RDLP is a straw-bale constructed sustainable building. The position requires assistance with the research, creation and mounting of exhibits, conducting tours, and providing fun educational programming. You will work with staff at the Minden Hills Cultural Centre, volunteers and visitors of all ages from around the world. The successful candidate will:
- assist with the development of educational programming and special events.
- assist with the development of new interactive elements for an exhibition of original artifacts and materials from the R.D. Lawrence collection.
- research, development of interpretive information,
- digitize archived materials and work with computer applications to develop new multi-media presentations which can later be used in virtual/online exhibitions.
- Assist with the third annual R.D. Lawrence Literary Festival of local and national authors.
- act as a docent, providing daily public tours
- assist the Writer-In-Residence program, public programming

A good candidate will have:

- an interest in or are studying history, journalism, English Literature, museum arts, the environment or tourism.
- computer literacy skills and preferably some experience with Excel, Photoshop (or similar  
  program) and Powerpoint.
- excellent public relations and communications skills
- an interest in environmental issues
- experience working in children’s or public programming an asset
- experience working in an office an asset
- must be able to lift and carry boxes and climb ladders
- must have experience working independently and experience handling cash is preferred
- must provide a CPIC before commencing work

 Job 2: Archive Project Assistant, Minden Hills Museum

Job Description:
The Minden Hills Museum is made up of 6 heritage buildings and a collections building surrounded by green space, trails and a peace labyrinth. The museum has been continuously working towards completing the digitization of its complete holdings – an exhaustive project. The priority for 2011 is to develop an on-line exhibition of the Black Smith Shop that was, the collection for which was digitized last summer with the assistance of a YCW student. The student will assist with all aspects of this project so that the foundation is laid for future virtual exhibitions. The student will:

- Assist with conceptualizing and designing the virtual l exhibition
- Assist with selection of images to use
- assist with developing narrative for the exhibit
- develop an interactive educational session in preparation for the coming school year related to pioneer studies in grade 3
- Research historical use of the various tools and items in the blacksmithing collection.
- assist with exhibit maintenance in each of the heritage buildings.
- Additional tasks related to general museum operations including opening/closing the museum buildings, taking admissions, light reception as needed, and providing museum tours.
- contribution to the Cultural Centre newsletter and duties in the rest of the Cultural Centre, as needed.

A good candidate will have:

- An interest in History, English, Museum Studies/Curatorial Studies, Tourism.

Job 3: Gallery/Curatorial Assistant – Agnes Jamieson Gallery

Job Description:

The Agnes Jamieson Gallery is a public art gallery which holds one of the largest public collections of the work of André Lapine. The gallery presents approximately 9 exhibitions annually, offers educational programming and provides exhibition assistance funding to artists. The student will assist the gallery curator with taking the gallery collection data and transferring it into a format that can easily be “data dumped” by our collections manager into the newly acquired collections software. The student will also assist with the daily operations of the Agnes Jamieson Gallery, including assistance with exhibitions installation, docent work, assisting with children’s programs and managing the front reception desk, You will work with staff at the Minden Hills Cultural Centre, volunteers and visitors of all ages from around the world. The student will:
-       assist with preparing collections information for transfer to new collection software
-       Assist with exhibition installation;
-       Assist with public education by giving tours of the exhibitions
-       Filing, archiving and assisting with digitizing collection;
-       Assist with events planning and prep (eg: opening receptions);
-       Assist with preparation and scheduling of art classes;
-       Front desk reception duties as needed;
-       Welcoming visitors and taking admission;
-       Assist with any questions from visitors;
-       Tracking attendance/upkeep of attendance statistics;
-       Work with volunteers;
-       Assist with gallery gift shop, which involves: completing sales transactions, recording sales, inventory, assisting with display of items.

Job Description:

The Minden Hills Cultural Centre is a 4 acre cultural complex that consists of the Agnes Jamieson Gallery, Minden Hills Museum, and R.D. Lawrence Place. The Events Coordinator will assist the Cultural Centre Director with centre promotions and events coordination. Specifically, the student will:
-       assist with preparations, promotions, front of house and coordination of our summer theatre
-       assist with preparations, marketing and coordination of the 2nd annual Beat Beethoven fundraising run.
-       work with staff at the Minden Hills Cultural Centre, volunteers and visitors of all ages from around the world.
-       develop advertising/promotional materials for summer youth programs;
-       ticket sales coordination for all summer theatre
-       assist with volunteer coordination for the major events.
-       provide administrative support to the director and events committee
-       assist with front of house for summer theatre.
-       assist with Culture Club, our main centre-wide kids programming for the summer.

A good candidate will have:

- an interest in or is studying the arts, performing arts, event coordination or tourism.
- computer literacy, preferably with experience in Excel and Powerpoint.
- excellent public relations and communications skills.
- excellent organizational skills.
- experience with ticket sales and “front of house” operations
- experience working in children’s or public programming an asset
